On newer Audis you can use the paddle shifter to shift even if the shifter lever is in D. I think it is a fairly easy to do.
So you driving down the road in D and you want to pass another vehicle. With you current setup you have 3 choices. Pass like an old man going to the church, floor it and wait until it down shift and goes like a mofo, or shift to tiptronic and down shift yourself. If you don't like any of these options and you want to control your shifting from the steering wheel, keep reading.
First, you need a paddle shifter. You can either buy a steering wheel with the tip buttons or you can make your own like a8drifter has.
Second, you need to install a micro switch on the shifter assembly to recognize the D position. You can't use the F125 switch signal because it is a low current signal and if you mess with it it could set a CEL. It is much easier to have a separate switch.

You can buy this switch at Radio shack. It's called Roller Lever Switch 275-017A $2.59. It looks just like your tiptronic engage switch.
So now we know the whole system will work only in D. If you switch to any other gear your TCM will cancel tip mode plus this system will cancel itself too. While you are at the Radio shack you need to buy 3 12V relays with 2 normally open and 2 normally closed circuit. You follow this wiring diagram and there you have it. You drive in D, but as soon as you hit one of the paddle shifter buttons, it will shift to tiptronic without all the jerking and shifting that the other 3 option would give you. It will return to regular D mode if you shift out of D or you can put a time delay to it, but then it could go back to D when maybe you don't want it. This will work independently and it will NOT send any power to the TCM. It will not cause limp mode or any other CEL because all this does is engaging tiptronic without moving the shifter lever to the right.
So here is you weekend project, hurry to the Radio shack is still open.
Note; This setup will not work on your car if you have a steering wheel tiptronic buttons from the factory. If you want it to work with it, you need to disconnect the original wheel buttons from the TCU and connect it to this wiring.
It will work with your tiptronic shifter if you live it in D or if you switch to tip mode.
It will work with your 97' non tiptronic A8.

Its hard to keep flicking a rocker switch to switch to tip mode, your way is much more intuitive and slicker.
