View Full Version : Wind noise near front window on a 1.8T vs 2.8

I am looking to purchase an A4. I recently took a 1.8T for a test drive and noticed considerable wind noise at the top edge of the drivers side window. I checked to see if any of the weather stripping etc. was malformed. Everthing seemed okay...the weather stripping around the windows matched as far as I could tell (dimensionally, left side vs. right side). I didn't have anyonne in the passenger seat so I'm not sure if it was on both sides.

I then took a 2.8 out and it did not have this noise at all. The big question is.....

Since the 1.8T has rubber trim around the window vs. the metal trim on a 2.8 is this noise present and expected on ALL 1.8T???

I'm new to this group so pls accept my apologies if this was discussed before.

Many thanks.....Joe

The 1.8T has blacked-out metal trim where the 2.8's trim is chrome...but they're both metal, so that wasn't the cause of the extra wind noise you heard in the 1.8T.

The problem was less-than-perfect door alignment on the 1.8T you drove...but it could have easily been the other way around (noise on 2.8 and not on 1.8T). There are a couple of "fixes" for the wind noise problem around the door (not the wind noise around the mirror housing that some folks experience). One fix is to move the door striker plate a bit in so the door fits snugger. The better fix is to remove the interior door panel and then realign the top portion of the door so it is slightly angled in a bit more. Someone on this board did this fix himself. I've done the striker-plate fix and it helped but didn't totally eliminate the wind noise (which seems worse in cooler/cold weather...I guess due to the seals contracting a bit). Anyway, one of these days I'll get around to trying the "realign the top part of the door" 'fix'.
