Something's not right. Other's have confirmed that this works for the '01 A8/S8. Perhaps it's a different set of codes for the '98.

Paul, does this work on your '97?

The thermostat starts to open at 87 oC (188 oF) and isn't fully open until 102 oC (215 oF). Darn, I didn't know the motor was designed to run quite that hot!

103 is external temp, and 104 is internal...

it is always higher than the a/c setting on my car. i would assume if it was outlet temp, it would always be colder than the cabin (i.e. a/c trying to cool the cabin down).
