Checked the manual, checked the A4 Avant supplement, even called the Dealer....archives are down for the moment.

Silly! How in the world do I get my rear wiper to work on my 99.5 A4 Avant? When I activate my front wipers, the rear wiper does not come on. Dealer says there is a button at the end of the wiper lever....NOT.

Any ideas or is it just broken?

Push the stalk away from you, this will activate the wiper. Pull it towards you and it will turn off.

Check the manual, it is in there. I had the same question for my salesman and he knew the answer, but it is in the A4 Avant manual. I received an A4 Avant manual and a supplement for the 99.5 changes, but manual is definitely for the Avant.
