I am about to purchase a 97 or 98 American A4 and was wondering what engine to go with. I have been told that the 1.8T is a better engine then the 2.8 because of a better design and more upgradeability. Is the 12v 2.8 really a bad engine? Should I spend the money to upgrade the 1.8T to 200bhp? Is it worth saving for 6 more months to get the 30v 2.8 over the other 2 engines. Please, any help is most appreciated.

How's THAT for sitting on the fence!
It's all about personal preferences.
Some call the 1.8T one of the smoothest 4 cyl engines they've ever driven and others say the 1.8T is buzzy in comparison to the 2.8. Everyone will have their opinions, but you need to drive them both and decide for yourself. In short, the 2.8 is smoother and more refined (but not as simple to modify) and the 1.8T has a "sportier feel" and is much more "tunable" with aftermarket modifications. If it matters to you, you can get leather and wood with the 2.8, you can't in the 1.8T.
Drive them both and if "chipping" is something you would consider, try to get a ride/drive in a chipped 1.8T. I'm in the Boston area if you would like a test.
