I ran into this link on here one time. It's pretty interesting to see Audi sell 50k units in 1975 and go to 33k in 76 as VW/Audi had serious quality problems in the 70s. Not that the American cars were any better. It's part to blame that you absolutely had to go to the dealers in the early years.

In 85'they made it up to 74k as the 5000s had a new style many tried to immatate. Remember the original Tauras and Pontiac 6000? Then, Morley and the Crew at 60 minutes ran the story and sales went to 22k in 88. Then came 12k in 91 as people literally got KILLED on resale value. You could have bought a Mercur or Sterling and got about the same dismal resale.

If you look at the slow sales of the V8, the A8 is a big success. I remember when they were discounting the new 50k V8s down to 38k. I dont think they are giving out 20% discounts on the new A8.

http://www.audiworld.com/model/historical/sales.html</a
