There are so many factors that go into insuring cars.

repair costs. It more than offsets the safety rating, which is just about the best you can get.
Notice that the Audi is the only one on the list with four doors.

The cost of repairing the aluminum frame is for sure a big part of the reason for the high insurance cost. Just look at how little of a wreck it takes before the insurance company considers the A8 a total loss.
I'm sure the stats are correct, but my experience was more encouraging. The insurance cost for the new A8L is scarcely higher than for the 2000 LS400 I traded in. I asked Allstate specifically about an "aluminum upcharge" and was told there is none and besides they feel they are mostly insuring the driver and to a lesser extent the car.
Of course YMMV

My agent almost fell out of her chair when I asked. 97 911 Turbo. (willing to bet the costs to insure would be similar to newer 996 C2 or C4)
Under 25 so its 1800 for 6mos. Turn 25 in Nov. The price goes down to 1150 for 6 mos. (about what I am paying now for the S4)
It cant be that bad to insure an A8. Then again I am numb to high insurance costs from living in NJ for so long before moving out to PA. In NJ my 02 Jetta TDI was 1200 for 6 mos to insure. 90hp of pure street racing power there folks!

You are right on the money.. When I went to insure my new Audi, my agent said the following words to me...."Please do not tell me this is an A8, please tell me this is an A6 or A4" Another thing no one spoke about here is the fact that every bum around wants to try and steal the Audi A8.. Since they are so rare, you never see them on the top 10 list of wanted cars but they are.. By the way, I understand you can not just hot wire an A8.. Unless you have a tow truck, the car is not going anywhere but you can still get in the car.. Also, the Audi alarm is a joke and the insurance companys know it so have the best system out there put in your car..I did this plus I removed the door locks and put survellance cameras in the car.. Did I over do it? No, I don't think so since my insurance was reduced by a good amount.. Plus my plate frame says, "smile, you are on survellance camera". No one tailgates me anymore and no bum has a chance of taking my car.. I did all this because when the car was a month old, two bums in a stolen S4 tried to pick my lock in front of my friend's house who happens to be a detective! Well needless to say they were not going anywhere except to nice little room with view.. I see the new M3 is also on this list..Just great! That is my other car....Now I need to do this again....

Having spent 7 weeks in your beautiful country I can beleive the lower insurance costs. When I visited, in the early '90s, it was like going back in time 15-20 years. The pace was wonderful, slower driving habits, hell you have a better chance of hitting a sheep than another car! Just kidding Dave! Would Love another visit in the future!

This year as long as I dont do anything foolish like swap my S4 for a 993 Turbo, My insurance will drop to 700 bucks for 6 mos on nov 21. If I get the p-car then my rates will stay the same as what they are now.
I keep the S4 my rates would go from 191 a month down to 117 a month....74 bucks a month savings! I guess it does pay to be 25. Its good thing I got out of NJ cause they just screwed over drivers there again, by taking the big discount when you hit 25 away. They upped it to 30y/o and 1979 is the cut off year!
It sucked cause State Farm along with a bunch of other insurance companies have basically black listed Evo, STI's, WRX, Neon SRT4's for anyone thats under 25. The S4 did get caught up in some of that but not nearly as bad. I was paying about a 1k every 6 mos for the S4. As of April 11th when my policy renewed they hit me with the new higher rate. I didnt get any tickets or anything its just that my age group was getting tagged harder for certain cars. Agent told me they sandbagged the other vehicles mentioned above with a rate increase of about $500-$600 for the year!
