The original VAG-COM tool (1552 I believe) is what dealers use. From my understanding, it can talk to the engine and tranny on the D3 A8.

That is most likely because the US DOT requires it to pull codes, etc. using a common protocol.

Then there is the new CAN (car area network) bus design for the A8 which controls the rest of the CAN.

I don't know what the dealer uses, but Uwe Ross (of ross-tech.com) is working on a new device to talk to the A8L which should be done in January. He's testing it on cars now, Greenie was asked if he wanted to join in because Uwe is out of Lancaster, PA if I recall.

The ross-tech software using the old cable talks to all the systems on the D2 A8.

This week is a little rough because Andy, my applications/support guy went to Vegas for the SEMA show. That means I have a lot of extra e-mails and phone calls to deal with.

But Friday will be OK, the later the better.

Last Friday's testing at a dealership went very well. Was able to get into every system in the car except 46-Central Convenience. I think we've identified and fixed the problem with that as well, but obviously need to test it on a car.

Assuming it works, you'll leave here with a full-function tool. Even if it still won't access 46-Central Convenience, you'll still leave with a 95% functional tool, and then we'll just have to try again..:-)
