The instrument cluster would need to be replaced and then programmed with a lower amount of miles in order to do it.

One way to find out would be to pull it out and look at the part number on it. But even then, who's to say it wasn't replaced at a dealer somewhere because it actually went bad. It is possible to find out but it would take some digging to know for sure. Meaning if I pulled it out of the dash I could tell you yes or no it was replaced. But then I would need to go through service history through Audi to know if it was done under a warranty claim of sorts.

my 2002 A8L had a narrow strip of paper with all the checkouts of the modules in the car... I believe the serial number and other id of the indtrument cluster was in there... you could get vag-com or the dealer to match the strip up with the current id on the cluster..

it might be possible if you have that original slip of paper...

Well all things being equal the software is going to show what part number the cluster is. Honestly one of the quickest sure fire ways to tell is to physically look at the part number on the cluster. If it ends with an X (yes the letter X) then it is a reman part from Audi.
