I recently bought a 99.5 A4 1.8T. I have enjoyed it tremendously, but I have not been getting great milage from my car. I have been getting close 19/26 mpg city/highway.

It recently went over the 1200m mark. I know there is a beak in period to get the optimum MPG, but how long is this.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I was getting 25/33 mpg (Imperial gal which is slightly larger than US.) on my new 1.8tqms and after hitting around 4000 km (2500 miles) I have noticed a small improvement. I'm expecting to get ~35 on the hyw after the first oil change at 5000 mi. I've also noticed that if you drive it hard, your milage stuffers tremendously.

Another guzzler

Americans aren't supposed to even notice lousy fuel economy, much less complain about it. Who cares if even the entry-level four-cylinder Audi is a guzzler?

My numbers have improved a few tenths recently, up to 19/24 at almost 5000 miles, compared to EPA ratings of 21/29 for a 1999.5 A4 1.8tqms wagon. These are measured values, I don't have the trip computer.

The interesting thing is the EPA ratings. My 1989 80 quattro was EPA rated 18/24. First tank, city driving, was 24MPG. Average for first 25000 miles, mostly city driving at high altitude with oxygenated fuel, was 26MPG. By the time the odometer crossed 100000 miles, the mileage dropped a bit, but never as low as the EPA ratings, and never as low as a brand-new A4 -- and the old "B3" five-cylinder quattro is very similar to the current "B5" four-cylinder quattro. The weight is about the same; a B3 sedan is 200 pounds lighter than a B5 sedan (300 pounds lighter than a B5 wagon).

Audi's EPA ratings used to be conservative. Now their cars seem to struggle to get up to the EPA ratings. Audi's playing the same game as Detroit these days.

I used to get around 24 MPG in my suberbia driving, but lately it has been around 20 MPG. I thought sudden drops like this were a bad sign, but the car seems to be running OK.

99.5 1.8tqms TAP chip, janex filter, 2800 miles on the odometer.

Getting 24.1 mpg with normal mixed driving..

Lowest MPG so far is ~21
Highest MPG is ~31(all highway from NYC to Boston)
