Can any synthetic 75w-90 gear oil be used or does it have to be an Audi part # ?I was going to top mine off tomorrow since I have a small leak and will not have time to replace the output shaft seal.Thanks.Great forum.

Final Drive has Torsen elements which depend upon the right lubricant.

remember that the auto tranny contains 3 separate components - the auto itself, whcih requires atf, and the final drive/torsen unit and the front drive/diff unit which require gear oil. each of the units is sealed form the other.

The leaking oil on cat was gear lube, not ATF. Seal was very tight, so I removed real trans plate and used a light press to remove and install, lots easier than in car, attempting to pick out old one then installing square, ect. Front and rear diffs use same Audi gear lube, where is the front diff drain and filler??? thanks john

The only info I could find is that there is a test hole on the intermediate flage on the left side of diff. and a fill plug next to the axle assembly.

on the rhs (when you are facing forward) on the rear of the unit, alongside the rear flange, and under the cover.

fluid level should be to the bottom of the hole.

remember to use gear oil (synth 75 w 90), and use a tube/squirter bottle to top up.

replace the sealing ring on the filler, and torque to 30nm.
