Brake fluid is another one of those things where it seems everyone has a different opinion. An AudiWorld search on "Brake fluid" turned up 2900 hits! As long as you use a DOT 4 fluid and change it every two years (or bleed brakes regular, like at track events), most any brake fluid is OK. See the link, but Valvoline High Performance Synthetic seems to be an economical good performer. If your '99 A8 is still running with the original rotors at 60k miles, they're probably rusted solidly to the hubs.

This weekend, it would really help if you pulled the wheels and sprayed a little bit of penetrating oil on the hub where it meets the rotor. [Don't overdue it; you definitely don't want oil on the swept area of the rotor or the pads!] Even so, we're still probably going to need a solid wack from a hammer to break the rotor free at Grattan, but hopefully a week's exposure to penetrating oil will have loosened things up somewhat. When we replace the rotors, we'll put some brake caliper grease on the hub to prevent this from happening again. And as you said, hopefully only the rear rotors need to be replaced.

Good brake fluid that you can probably find would be

1. Valvoline Synthetic. It's not really synthetic, but it works and has a
high boiling point.

2. Ford HD Brake Fluid. Should be at any FoMoCo dealer. Cheap, works
well.

3. Castrol GT-LMA would do in an emergency.

How much time do you have? You could order a pint of Ate fluid
from any number of places, Paragon Products comes to mind, and
have it in 3 days.

That's what I used on the A6 when Ray and I pulled the big 60k maintenance 6+/- weeks ago, and I'm about to do the A8 with.
