I have a 99 4.2 A8, I tried to do a high speed run but it cut off at 130 mph, I am positive this is not the top speed. It is because of the tires right? Well what do you think the top speed is..

Thanks Steve

I'm probably going to get slapped down hard for this but keep in mind this is a pretty slippery and light vehicle for its largish size. I am going to say an unregulated top speed of 162mph could be achieved.

Is this what the maximum gearing allows in the 5spd Auto Tiptronic and what gear is this in? Can we hit that 280 km/h speedo?

According to MTM's measurements the A8 with the 300 hp engine (95-98?) should reach 272 km/h or 170 mph (I believe) without limiter.

Hence, Bart's mean machine (310 hp?) might be even a tad faster than that, given the limiter is removed :-).

Can't wait to get my hands on one of these machines myself, I will probably go with the 300 hp version though.

I don't think that you are off the correct figure. According to every "chip tuner", they can achieve 263+ KM/H (they only add 10-15 HP....) and remove the limiter. 1 mile= 1.609 Km, that means that 163+ MPH is the top speed.
I will ignore the marginal difference that the "chip" makes.

Not at all, many cars top out at redline, some cars top out at hp peak, some cars top out with a drag limited top speed. If final drive was the only thing that mattered then you could gear any car to do 300mph.

...I discussed this very subject with Stephen at APR a few months ago. Apparently, with the limiter removed, they got a client's car up to 170MPH (indicated). Supposedly the car was as quiet and composed at that speed as it is 100mph slower. Wow.
