I did a stupid thing tonight. I went to toss a piece of paper in the fireplace and the key was also being clasped in that hand. The key slipped out and went right into the ashes. I got it out quickly but it was really hot and melted a bit in the corner. I figured it would be fine but it will no longer arm or disarm the car. I took it apart and everything looks OK in side, the batteries are fine too, but it just won't do anything when I press the buttons.

My question to you people is have you found any places on the Net that sells these at a reasonable price? It is a 2000 Audi A8 but I think they are all the same, at least they all look the same to me. I don't need the part with the flip out key but the part with the electronics, they slide apart. Thanks.

I have the opposite problem -- in the cold my remote looses its memory. So I put one master in the door lock the other in the ignition and reprogram it... wishing you best of luck

I was under the impression that the car has memory, not the remote. Am I wrong? How do you reprogram the remote? I know how to teach the car but not the remote? Thanks.

I would take the burnt key to the dealer and see if they'll replace it for free. What have you got to lose? At worst, they'll say it's not covered. Just tell them it stopped working - maybe spontaneous combustion did it.

I got it fixed thanks to the suggestion of a person in the A6/S6 forum. I guess the heat just wiped out the memory. It was also suggested here but the guy there told me how to do it which was nice.

So, besides the melty bumpy bits it is working fine. Thanks.
