View Full Version : Hoe do you feel about your catback Scorpion Exaust. I want to buy one. Is there extra power and how is the sound. Thanks (nt). Leo 12-04-1998, 07:46 PM ChuckH 12-04-1998, 08:40 PM ...I have the Scorpion Cat back system on my 5 cylinder 90 quattro, and love it. I don't know how much, but I did get a little extra power after installing it. I'm guessing around 10-12 Hp or so would be likely. The tone is fabulous. At idle, it has a mellow rumble which is only slightly louder than stock. It's also only slightly louder when cruising, but does offer a significant deep throaty sound under throttle. Off throttle gives a few "pops." It does not make high pitched farting or buzzing bee sounds like some exhausts! If you are interested in some weight savings, I'll also tell you that the Scorpion was significantly lighter than the factory exhaust. The DTM tips are nicely finished.
Charles
Eric H. 12-05-1998, 04:57 AM Beano before; quiet after. :) Robbie 12-05-1998, 08:13 AM I've got the Scorp with the TAP stage II setup. I'm very fond of the power increase (I believe the exhaust accounts for 8-10hp increase with my setup). The system has a very nice, baritone sound. My VW racing friend complains jokingly that it's "not loud enough". You should hear his '84 Wolfsburg Rabbit. The Scorp sounds just right IMO.
A couple of things... the tips on my Scorp system angle up. So far not a problem in two very strong storms, but it seems like it has the potential to be a rain guage. I'm going to get a dipstick for the tips and try this theory out :>
Visibly, they're fairly noticeable. I'm the type that likes the power benefits, but prefers the car to look bone-stock. It is very impressive however, and its appearance has grown on me.
All-in-all: Quality, effective and fun.

Kevin S 12-05-1998, 08:54 AM If yours don't have these, it might not be a bad idea to drill them.
What often happens is water pools and mixes with the caron and eventually ends up splattered on your bumper.
Kev Robbie 12-05-1998, 09:04 AM Leo 12-05-1998, 10:17 AM Robbie 12-05-1998, 10:36 AM Yeah, good power. You can feel the difference when the turbo kicks in. Launches are improved over stock too. This solution really shines over 3k rpms. Coming out of a corner in second gear around these rmps, if you floor it, you will be pressed against your seat. If you live near one of the TAP distributors, some can even let you test drive the chip (sans exhaust) before you buy.
I figure my 0-60mph to be around 7.0secs. (About 1.4 secs better than stock 1.8Tqms)

Ali B 01-07-1999, 05:28 PM After reviewing the test data in the six-way sports sedan test conducted by Road & Track in their february 1999 issue, I need some technical help from the experts at A4.org.
The A4 2.8 quattro does 0-60 in 7.1 seconds. First gear redlines @ 31 mph, followed by second gear @ 56 mph, both at 6000 rpm. In order to reach 60 mph, a shift to third gear is required.
The BMW 328i does 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. First gear redlines @ 37 mph and second gear redlines @ 63 mph, again both at 6000 rpm. The BMW only needs one shift to hit the 60 mph mark.
Isn't it possible for Audi to gear the A4 differently (similar to BMW) to do better in acceleration runs? In real life without redlining the engine in each gear, would the difference in acceleration feel be more subtle than 0.5 seconds?
The other question has do with the torque charactersitics of the 2.8 30-valve engine. R&T says that this engine pulls strongly above 3500 rpm, but is 'disappointingly flat off idle'. Since the Audi's 207 lb-ft of torque peaks at 3200 rpm versus BMW's 206 lb-ft at 3500 rpm, wouldn't you expect the A4 to have higher torque at 2500-3000 rpm and better low-rpm response? Is the BMW torque curve flat while the Audi engine's torque curve very peaky?
I would like to see a comparison of the torque curves of these two engines because comments like the one by R&T have always baffled me.
Cameron 01-07-1999, 05:35 PM nt
Damon 01-07-1999, 05:47 PM What is the stock ratio?
What are the available ratio's from Porche?
How MUCH machining is required?
Reliability once thy're in assuming my Audi mechanic does the job right?

Is this for real or another unsurmountable A4 adventure story of yours? I would REALLY love to change the gear ratios. I strongly believe that Audi missed 'em big time and it would be a TREMENDOUS improvement in acceleration. But I don't want to become caught up in a figment of your imagination. As much as I love your undenyable love for the A4 and your imaginative posts. %^ )
-D Cameron 01-07-1999, 05:54 PM nt
Brett Weir 01-08-1999, 05:49 AM I'm with you Ali. I've seen your 323i posts on bimmer.org as well. These 0-60 times are a mystery. I drove the A4 2.8 and thought it had a good amount of punch around 3000, just as the torque curve would indicate. |
