These quotes are from the July 28, 1999 issue. Please no flames. I am merely quoting this UK magazine verbatim.
"S4 widely seen as too soft, despite 265 bhp and 295 lb-ft
Audi seems to have taken criticism of its hot S4 to heart. Despite boasting all-wheel drive, a twin-turbo V6 engine and a 5.5 second 0-60 time, the S4's on-road dynamics let it down. A little too soft and lacking real edge, it is more ultra-fast cruiser than red-blooded sports car. The RS4 (400 hp) is set to change all that."
Elsewhere in the same issue, in an article about the Alpina BMW B3, the S4 is listed as one of the cars the Alpina B3 must compete against:
"Ferociously quick and all the grip in the world thanks to four-wheel drive, but S4 fails to satisfy as a driving machine. Poor steering and gearbox."
By the way, this issue has a lot of Audi stuff, from a cover story on the 225-hp TT Roadster to coverage of the upcoming A8 W12 and A2 models.
