I just picked up my 99 A4, One thing I noticed is that the snowflake in the climate control display never comes on. Because of this I can never put on my re-circulate function. The salesman told me it's to cold for the snowflake to show (22 F.). I don't buy his story. It seems idiotic to me that if I want to avoid the diesel smell of the city bus in front of me I should be able to turn it on. I've tried pushing the buttons droping the temp down, but nothing works.
Is this a function of the car, or is the A/C broken. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like normal A4 climate control behavior to me. The snowflake only appears for a certain temp. range around freezing (+/- 5 C I think), so if it's been cold you may not have seen it yet. Recirc and A/C does not work when temp is below around 35 F. I think there's a FAQ written on this subject. Yes, it's annoying.
Terry T. 97 1.8TQMS

We are talking about two different snowflakes here. The snowflake that comes on at +5 C and goes back off at -5 C (+41 F and 23 F presumably for those handicapped in that system) is on the outside temperature display. The other snowflake indicating the compressor is on is on the climate control. I have not yet established exactly when the compressor goes off but as was posted it is in the archives.
By the way, I really suspect a programming error on the +/-5 issue. It seems to me that somebody forgot that -6 is colder than -5 in the program to indicate when icing conditions are prevalent. Then again, as someone pointed out earlier, when it is -5 or below, you should realize that ice can be around.
My 2 pfennig worth!
Clair, 98.5 2.8 FWD MAN

No. Below 35 F, the air confditioning system cannot pull water vapor out of the air as condensate as it freezes to the evaporator. The compressor is forbidden to operate as it wouldn't do much good frozen solid, neat how those German engineers think?
Besides, the relative humidity at near freezing temps will drop to 25% whne warmed to comfortable temperatures.
My solution? Kick the vents out toward the glass. If it is really bad, go to manual on the blower. If it really is bad, turn the defrost on. This ALWAYS works. Oh, and try reading the fine instructions that came with your car.
Keith
