View Full Version : Xenon Headlight Question

After over a year of living with a cracked driver's side headlight housing on my 2000 A6 I've decided to get the light replaced (I haven't been driving the car much and not at night either).

My current headlights are halogens and I've decided to upgrade and buy OEM Xenon's and replace both sides. A couple of questions for the experts on this as I've read through the archives:

1- I have an early build 2000 A6 and know that the "prisms" in the lights were changes after my VIN #. Anyone know if the newer versions are any better for both MY2000 or later years?

2- Is there any issue with fitment if I'm replacing the entire headlight? I know the auto leveling will not be supported in my car, but the dealer service manager told me to make sure that the ignitors were built into the headlight. Based on what I've read they are "plug and play" correct?

Anything else that I should be aware of with this upgrade?

TIA,
DJ

What is the expected life of the Xenon lamps? Do they ever burn out?

I'm going to have 2 driver's side Xenon headlights for sale soon. I have one A6 Xenon from my '99, and one Allroad from a 2001 that I'm not going to use.

The headlights are plug and play. A brand new A6 housing, including the ignitor, is about $520. The Allroad headlight is slightly less around $460. I priced these at Clair Audi recently.

If I'm not mistaken, you could actually replace just the lens. AND... check with your insurance agent, the cracked lens might be covered under a non-surchargeable rider for windshield replacement.

did you come across a pair of those, or did you just find the one driver side lamp?

I didn't think that the allroad and A6 (V6) headlamps are interchangeable.

I'm in the very middle of an upgrade on my car now...see separate post.

trader1 has done it. Have a look at his pic poster.

The headlights I'm using are US spec, so the running lights are intact.

Personally, Lee, I wouldn't be concerned about a ticket in that situation.

trader1 pic post

I just spoke to Clair parts on this and they said the ignitors are included in the headlamps but there is some wiring involved and the plugs would need to be changed. Can anyone confirm this or provide more details?

Thanks again,
-DJ

I have a headlight sitting in a box at home. I'll take a picture of the plug for you tonight.
