View Full Version : timing belt - cams moving during installation question sowacycling 06-03-2004, 05:37 AM if the cams did move during installation of the timing belt - what would the car do? JAA 4.2 06-03-2004, 06:14 AM Either your timing will be advanced or retarded depending on which way the cam rotated for that bank of cylinders. There isn't a good way of guessing which way things may have turned. Whichever way they might have moved isn't good though. It sounds like they didn't get out so far that there is interference between the valves and piston, but I wouldn't drive the car if you think this may have happened. Either way, peak power will be down. sowacycling 06-03-2004, 06:33 AM thanks - yeah the power is there - so i'm guess everything is ok....is there anyway to check without ripping apart the car again? tx jasaab 06-03-2004, 07:27 AM THe only 100% way to get your valves in sync is to remove the valve cover and look at the timing marks. Not that hard. And spend a $100.00 to buy a cam locker. 02a62.7t6spd_madman 06-03-2004, 07:49 AM April 06-03-2004, 08:58 AM it is usually a bit lumpy at idle and power not all there at lower rpms. When you rev it, it will seem to smooth out and power will usually get much better. sowacycling 06-03-2004, 12:08 PM Thanks - so what do you suggest I do - have another mechanic take the car apart again - what are the steps to make sure teh cams are in line? |
