Hi Everyone,
I just purchased a '99.5 A4 1.8T Avant (Silver Surfer). I've only been driving it for a few days, suffice to say I'm having a blast and I got a pretty good price from a local dealer (~$1050.00 over invoice).
I have a couple of questions regaring performance. I'd like to get a few extra horsepower without chipping. My thinking is that a K&N air filter and a performance exhaust system would be the best bet. I did this with my 1988 Honda CRX Si and it gave me a decent improvement. My question is, which model K&N air filter fits my car (I don't see it listed anywhere) and which exhaust system will give me the best bang for the buck?
My apologies if this topic has been covered before.
Thanks!

And about the most bank for buck on the exhaust...I am gonna suggest the Remus
muffler and some type of cheap replacement of the center resonator (cherry bomb?).
The Remus...if you shop around...is about $465...the cherry bomb about $25....and
you might be able to get installation for about $0-40. I got mine installed for free by
a Midas shop in my area.

although if I was in your position I would want to chip. (I'm sure you have some very good reasons as to why not though).
In terms of the K&N - have you searched the forum? The forum is very easy to use when looking for specific information. The letters K&N are particularly easy.
I decided to go the extra step and do a search for you. Here is a copy of a post I found in the archives:

From K&N's product information hotline (800-858-3333), here are the part numbers:
YEAR ...... 1.8T ....... 2.8 ........ Audi Part (1.8T and 2.8)
1996 ................. 33-2675 ............ 058 133 843
1997 ..... 33-2125 ... 33-2675 ............ 058 133 843
1998 ..... 33-2125 ... 33-2125 ............ 058 133 843
1999 ..... 33-2125 ... 33-2125 ............ 058 133 843
K&N doesn't list a part number for the 1996 1.8T, however, the 33-2675 would probably fit assuming both
engines use the same filter size. For some reason, the 1997 has different part number for the engine option.
The size (inches) of the 33-2675 is 9 15/16 L x 8 1/4 W.
The 33-2125 is 10 L x 8 3/8 W.
The Audi filter 058 133 843 and is 10 1/4 L x 8 1/2 W.
If you want a K&N filter, call J&M Speed Center in Riverside, CA. at 909-688-7110 and ask to speak to Lisa.
They are local to K&N (Riverside) and can get the filter the same day and will do mail order. The price
(33-2125) was $38.95, other places I called wanted $48.
Others have recommended Imparts: http://www.imparts.com/

forget about air filters giving extra power. i did it and didn't see/feel a difference. i sold my filter since i didn't want to give the dealer a tipoff that the car was modified and didn't want to deal with the oil/mess. also, i don't believe that the gauze type of filter traps as much dirt since the intake had grit/dirt post filter after running the filter for a while. the stock paper filter keeps that little bit of grit out.
the exhaust certainly sounds like it helps, but the gain is minimal. i use a scorpion exhaust, which i think helps the looks, but doesn't really add too much to the power. sounds cool too though.
i've since added the k04 turbo from neuspeed and the performance is adequate, but still not stellar.
i'd wait to see what the supercharger conversion nets and then decide between that and the k04.
