Received the 6 disc changer from Clair yesterday and decided that despite the heat I'd install it in our new 99.5 1.8t QMS. As others have said, no adaptor or mounting kit needed - just the four screws provided by Clair...
After removing the tool box I took my small screw driver and practiced gaining access to the four screw locations. While trying to get to the fourth (darn difficult, if possible) I, of course, dropped the small screwdriver and listened to it rattle down below the mounting rack.
Rats, I think to myself. Despite my best efforts at retrieval, the darn thing stays stuck below the rack. Looks like it's time to remove trunk trim and remove the rack from the car! Took about 10 minutes to remove the rear cover, pop off half of the connectors for the drivers side trim (I did not remove it completely, just enough to get access to the 5 mounting bolts (8mm) for the rack).
Removed the 5 bolts and the rack (carefully), then retrieved the screw driver. At this point I figure I might as well put the changer in - it is much easier to install all four screws with the rack out (as was posted a few months ago). Disconnected the battery before plugging in the player (I wrapped the connection with black electrical tape, even though the connection seemed pretty secure) then bolted the rack back into the body. Be certain not to drop any of the bolts, or else the whole thing has to come back out....(no, I didnt do this but I sure thought about it)
Reconnected the battery, put the proper code in the radio, and tested the changer before I reinstalled the trim - just in case. Everything worked great, so I finished reassembling the trunk.
Took about 1 hour or so, and a lot of sweat (105 with 60% humidity. Yuck). No major problems encountered. Just be careful you dont damage the drivers side liner when gaining access. I didnt remove it completely as it wraps around the rear seat as I didnt want to muck up the fit. Had to replace one clip (stayed in the rack, not the liner, easy fix), but other than that uneventful.
That CD changer is in solid now. No problem. Sounds great.
All in all, rather easy, though a bit involved. Good fit and finish to everything I saw or took apart.
