been wondering for months why u would bother to disable the headlight washer when the lights are on.
After 2 weeks in Toronto i now know why.
I am going through a gallon of washer fluid per WEEK!!!!
and i don't have the trip computer, so no warning! (plug for trip computer)
Other than the switch, any one just disabled them completely? They don't seem to do much good anyway, as the headlights were covered in a thick film of muck after 45 min of driving.

1996 a4 2.8 qm (toronto)
PS.
With all these posts from toronto people, how come i did not see more of you at the meeting?!? (consider yourself chastised. )

You see :-)
To disable them completely, just pull the plug on the washer container: open the hood, and in the right front corner (when facing the car) there is the container. At the bottom you just can reach with your hand and pull the plug. That will disable the headlight washers.
- Stan
I'd love to come, but I didn't get any notification about the last one. I don't think I was added to the list, or I was added late.
I'll see you guys at the next one though (any idea when/where?).
Cheers,
-Ash 98.5 Silver 1.8TQMS

It sounds like you are going through too much washer fluid for normal winter use....
What could be happening is that there is a common flaw with the A4 washer system where the washer pump will slowly creep out of the grommet that it rests in due to engine vibrations. To check this, open your hood, and press down on the washer pump, if it goes down into the tank, you know it was coming out and that causes all of your fluid to leak out. My car is in the shop at this very moment for this problem.
Christian J. Long

When you follow the link below, I have a link early in the text to the headlight washer cutoff directions, as described by Don Pavlik.
BE CAREFUL WITH THE WOOD TRIM when removing the switches. I would know why...
- Stan

The promised link

Last week the roads had salt muck flying like crazy Pa. DOT is now using liquid salt dispensed by tanker truck. I let my headlight washer defeat switch in the on position all week and went through 7 quarts of fluid in 6 days!
I don't have any leaks in the system. It just uses that much with the headlight washers activated.

i don't quite understand what u are saying. Is the pump in the container??
i could leave a piece of material under the car overnight to see if there are any drippings?
or did yours only leak under use.

1996 a4 2.8
My 98.5 has a delay for the headlight sprayers - won't activate unless I hold windshield spray switch on continuously for over about 2 seconds. So, when I want to wash windows and don't want to wash lights, just flick the spray lever rather than holding it with a death grip. Headlight washers never come on, windshield only needs a momentary 1 sec flick a couple of times. Yes, headlight washers work - I flooded windshield with a > 2 sec burst and saw them actuate.
Have been doing this past couple of days when roads were snow/salt/gravel/dirt covered due to bad weather here in Pittsburgh. Headlight washers never came on, to my knowledge
