View Full Version : Another chipped windshield story...what gives? (long)

I was driving along a whindy stretch of road (paved)in my '97 1.8TQ. In the opposite lane I passed a truck and watched in amazement as this tiny pebble came hurling over my hood and then gouged this tiny chip into the driver's lower side of the windshield...I actually saw it carve out a piece of the glass. If A4 windshields are prone to such chips, does anyone know what AoA's response has been?

The dealer said it was simply a chip made by a pebble (DUH) and not a defective winshield. I need to get it patched so it doesn't eventually turn into one big crack.

If anyone has experienced this before, recommend total windshield replacement or a simple windshield patch?

Thanks again all.

Steve

I have had quite small pebbles chip my windshield before. It doesn't take a weak windshield to allow that to happen. The right speed, pebble edge, etc. can all contribute to a dissapointing ding.

I am only dissapointed by the slight visual distortion that comes with this glass, but do like the fact that it is a very light windshield. (I cherish weight over many other things in my vehicles...)

I had my windshield patched approximately 6" down from the rear view mirror. The chip was drilled all the way through the glass and then back filled with epoxy to keep out water. What was noticable now only looks like a small squashed bug. I don't notice it at all while driving, even though I know its there.

The repair cost $50 and insurance covered it. From what you describe, a replacement sounds like overkill. (and expensive)
