Got 2000+ miles on my 2000 2.7t. I have heard that the oil that audi puts in initially is synthetic. What oil should I add if I need to add oil before the first oil change? Is it true that the oil is some type of synthetic?

Was thinking of eventually going with Mobil1. Should I make the switch at the 1st oil change or do I need more mileage with dino for everything to sit properly?

actually synthetic oil would be preferred if you're thinking you want the rings to seat properly in your cylinders. Synth has better temp performance while dino actually has better lubricity properties.

I don't think anyone knows for sure what oil is used for fill. Other posters have said that Mobil 1 is the only 0W-30 sold in U.S., and have assumed the fill is Mobil 1. Who knows, in Germany there may be other 0W-30's. However, Mobil 1 is the only oil I've heard of that's available in the right viscosity, and Mobil 1 is compatible with both synthetic and petroleum based oil, so I'm using Mobil 1 0W-30. (BTW, have been using it in my wife's 1.8T for about 4 months. It seems to like it)

No offence, but I don't think I can agree that petroleum based oils lubricate better. All evidence I've ever read is the opposite.

I've heard (secondhand) that for the first 15-20K miles, dino oil is better and this is what Audi puts in at the factory. Something about rings seating better with dino. After that, synth is better.

I emphasize this is secondhand information, nothing authoritative.

I've never seen either of these grades in a non-synth. So how could they come with dino oil?
