View Full Version : Fuel wierdness

Anybody noticed these things?

1. Fuel guage "suddenly" reading empty
Last time I was in the car I had a little less than a half tank. Next time, I get in, and I'm on serious empty (under 1/8 tank). The first time it happened, I thought someone was stealing gas from my car...

2. Can't fill up all the way
Fuel guage reads under 1/8 tank, but I can't put more than about 10 gal. into it. Manual says it's a 16 gal. tank. If I try topping it off after the gas pump auto shuts off, I get a gasoline shoeshine, so it *seems* full. Fuel guage still only reads less than 3/4 tank after this "fill-up."

The car didn't used to do this stuff. It's only started recently. Both started about the same time. Coincidence?

What's going on? Any suggested fixes?

But I'm at 60K miles, so I haven't brought it up with the dealer. Unless it gets real bad, I'm just going to live with it.

A while back, my gauge started going to only 7/8 after a fillup. Shortly after that started, I experienced the same thing as you - started the car and it read empty even though I had a half tank. As I drove it the next couple of days, it slowly crept up to the correct level.

It then seemed to correct itself for a while, but I noticed yesterday when I filled up, it read less than 3/4 for a while. It eventually made it up to 7/8.

It seems unlikely to me that it would be a calibration problem. If it was, I'd expect repeatable performance. Seems more like a mechanical failure in the sending unit.

Please let me know if you find out anything.

It now goes all the way to the top...and is roughly accurate. I do not top off the tank anymore...which is annoying...since I have to get gas after about 245 - 260 miles...I use to
make it to about 280 miles before stopping my topping off procedure.
