Canadian A4 to American A4 - I have to modify my A4 so it meets U.S. Safety standards.

1) speedometer must read miles per hour (from kms per hour)

2) brake warning light must have the word "BRAKE" in letters at least 1/8 inch high.

3) ABS warning light must have the word "ABS" in letters at least 1/8 inch high.

Does anyone know how I can do this UNEXPENSIVELY? I was told by the Audi dealership that I may have to replace the entire cluster and this is very expensive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Because the requirements are such that the work is to be done by a QUALIFIED location, Audi won't let anyone else do it but a dealership. If you do it elsewhere, then audi won't say that it matches the importation requirements, thereby leaving you unable to bring the car in as Audi's blessing is required. I did mine for about $850 CDN in Toronto (actually out in Whitby). Sorry about the bad news....When they do it, they also change all the settins (inclduing temp control) to imperial measurements.

There may be a slight possibility that I have to move to Toronto, ofcourse with my A4. Do I have to change my clusters to km/h and all that or can I try to hide the fact and get by?

StanJ has done this to his fully U.S. spec car. (Well, originally U.S. spec) It s a do-it-yourself fix, that I think is even mentioned in the manual.

"Unless" you're moving to a state( like Pa.) that has a "black and white" inspection policy I doubt that any body would hassle you for an inspection sticker to register your car-does your current spedo have dual markings like the US version?-ie kph in small numbers and mph in large numbers-I've rented cars in Europe that had the dual markings-kph in large and mph in small-not all but some-then you could always argue that speedo is legal for that reason!this is an example of
just more federal interference and indifference to what what most of the world is doing-Metric system-the warning lights(Federal law) are more nonsense!

I bought a brand new Canadian spec A-4 in Vancouver 3 weeks ago and I got Washington registration on the same day I bought my car from Vancouver. NO modification, full Canadian spec. First you have to pass the US Customs, they want the letter from Audi states that the car meets EPA and DOT standard, they really don't care the minor things stated on the Audi letter, and just tell them you will fix it and pay the import tax, then the US Custom will issue you a document saying your car meets the US importation, in Seattle Washington, the State Patrol and Licensing office accept Kilometer if the car is for your personal use, no hassle.

If you need more details ... email me ...
