I'm getting ready for the 5K scheduled maintenance and wanted to put in synthetic oil. I live in the southbay and hit Tahoe during the winters, if that makes any difference.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I've got a '98 1.8TQms and originally switched to Mobil 1 15W50 (old formulation)@ 5k miles. After discussing it with several enthusiasts, at my next service I replaced it with Redline 10W30.
The lighter weight oil seems to allow faster spool up of the turbo and the car seems more responsive. My oil temp rarely surpasses 225 deg.F, even during hard mountain driving in hot weather, and I've never seen it go above 250.
If you check out Redline's website (www.redlineoil.com), you can read a lot of excellent info on this subject. (They recommend using their 15W50 with engines that routinely run hotter than 225 deg.F, e.g., air-cooled motors, and advise you use the lower weight oils for turbomotors.) It seems to work for me.
