hello All;
My '99 A4 1.8t is going to pass 1500 miles this week. I know that certain engine components have to "settle in" during the break-in period. Given the comments I've read here about the engine's developing a dramatically new personality after break-in, I have to wonder something:
Could it be that the ECU changes its behavior after a certain mileage or a certain number of engine hours ? Maybe the engine runs slightly de-tuned until the ECU detects that break-in has occurred, and then the parameters change for optimum performance... ?

just a $0.02 speculation,
-K. In reference to "the engine's developing a dramatically new personality after break-in", I've only read this about the 2.8, not the 1.8t
I never really noticed that much of an increase in performance when my 1.8t was broken in...for that type of change, get chipped. Then you'll know what a dramatic new personality is all about!
Andy Hedin
'97 A4 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar Chip, ABT Filter, Euro Headlights with
PIAA SuperWhite's, A!AvantGarde Grill, Smoked Side-Markers,
Clear Corner-Markers, Tint

but my '99 2.8 seemed noticeably zippier when it hit 1000mi. In particular, the throttle response seemed to be more immediate. Maybe it was my imagination, but my first thought was that the ECU had been programmed to hold it back during the break-in.
