I am considering purchasing a 15" replica of the 5
spoke OEM A4 wheel to mount snows on. I remember a post
last winter about someone having trouble with the snow
collecting inbetween the spokes and have the wheel thrown
out of ballence due to the excess weight of the frozen snow.
Was this an isolated incedent or have others had this trouble
too? I don't want to buy these then discover they were a poor choice for
snow. I live in Souther CT and snow is sporratic.
We just had 6" of powder followed by 12hrs of rain.
I do however drive to VT and NH to ski.
Any help would be appriecated.
mark

I live in Toronto and recently we had a huge dump. I found that there was a noticable imbalance in the five spoke OEM caused by snow buildup. What I noticed was a vibration in the steering wheel which was annoying.
Phil H
97 1.8QMS

I live in Norwalk, CTand have 5 spoke OEM wheels.....never had a problem.
-S
The problem occurs with all mags as there is a wider flat area inside the wheel
ie as compared to a steel wheel where the bolt pattern is equadistant between the inside and outside of the wheel and/or the metal is sloped. The problem occurs most after leaving the car sit for few hours after deep snow--heat from car and salt causes partial melting-- then re-freeze at the bottom. The 5 spoke is easier to knock out ice than my passat syncro or bmw. It's happened to all.
