My trip computer showed 14 miles to empty. The fuel gauge was VERY low. I know my A4 has a 19 gallon tank. It only took a little over 13 gallons and the pump kicked off. I tried to put more in because I checked the fuel gauge and it was not reading full. I flat out couldn't get more than 13.5 gallons in. The fuel gauge never did reach the full reading. Anyone else have this problem?
Tommy
99.5 1.8TS-Tip

I know a6 owners who have run out of gas due to an incorrect fuel gauge reading. There's even a TSB on it.
but are you sure that the car takes 19 gallons? The most I've ever put in the car is about 13 gallons, and that was when the "low fuel" light was on.
I'd make you odds that your fuel tank doesn't hold 19 gallons. If it is quattro, it holds slightly less than the fwd model. I don't have my owner's manual in front of me, but I think it is 15.4 for the A4 Quattro. Also, the fuel guage is one of the least linear I've ever seen, so don't judge the actual amount of gas you have by the position of the needle. My advice? Start looking for a gas station when the guage reads 1/4 full. What's the advantage of waiting?

One of the items on my list for this service was to check the fuel gauge. I always put a full tank of fuel but the gauge will show "almost" full. This started happening at about 20K miles.
I thought that they were going to replace the sending unit in the gas tank but they told me that sometimes the gauge gets out of calibration. Apparently, all they had to do was to recalibrate the fuel gauge with the VAG tool and now it shows "full".
They even filled up the tank to show that it was working! :-)
I hope this helps.
Sergio
98.5 1.8TMS / Pearl

I've just started to notice that too. When I fill up, it doesn't show exactly full. But after I stop and shut down the engine, the next time I start it, it shows full.
I'll see if this keeps happening. I may get it fixed during the next service.

When I was having problems with the fuel gauge, not only would it be inaccurate and not read full, but the fuel gauge would dance around. It would constantly fluctuate from E to F. Not a slow creep up and down, but REALLY fast. LIke a mini tachometer. Up down up down.
