View Full Version : Has any one with a 99.5 been driven insane by seeing the reflections of the red roof lights when R. view mirror is in upper dim position??(more--a lot)

When I first used the rear view mirror at night, in the dim position, on my 99.5 1.8TAvant, which by the way is a truly sweet car, I could see the car behind me with sufficiently dimmed lights but I could also see floating all around it the reflection of the red lighting coming from the sun roof/lighing controls above my head.
It was a truly nautious condition. As my head moved the car behind me would shift only slightly while the red lights would circle around it like space ships.
I tried to reverse the dim position to its lower frame of reference but the alignment is wrong in that position.
I know this will be fixed in MY2000 with auto dimming mirrors, but man it is driving me crazy. Basicaly I don't dim my mirror at night.
Hugh
P.S. Very little drug use since high school. The red lights are really there.
For the complaint police I want to stress again that I LOVE THIS CAR!!

Use the lever flipped forward (up) for daytime and the lever flipped back for nightime.

I hate to say Read The Manual but:
The "Supplement to Owner's Manual" that comes with the 99.5 A4....PAGE 10 says:
"To ensure the best possible anti-glare effect, the lever on the lower edge of the mirror should be pointing forwards when the basic setting is made.
Daylight driving................-lever to front
Night driving...................-lever to rear"
I know this is reverse from what most of us are used to but it works. No more red light glare!
Mitch 99.5 1.8tqms

Although now I can see the reflection of the light gray leather rear seats superimposed over the night image. It is kind of annoying; this type of engineering problem could and should have been fixed. Still better than seeing the red lights though.
Dan
99.5 2.8QTipS
