Hi all,
I ordered a 99 Audi 1.8T in September. The dealer said it would probably arrive before Thanksgiving. Near Thanksgiving, I called and asked about the car's status. He said that the car was coming on a boat leaving Germany around November 22 (that may not be the exact date). He said the car would be here by Christmas.
A week before Christmas I call and he says that there is a big tie-up in the Delaware port. He claims that the car is still stuck at the Delaware port but the car should be here by January 1.
I called today and he says that the car is lacking a part and this has been the cause of the delay. He says that neither he nor the factory rep knows the exact part that is missing. He also does not know how long it will take to fix.
I told him we would not take the car until I had a report on exactly what was wrong with the car. He said that that sounded reasonable and that he would find out what has gone wrong.
Of course, since he has been keeping me in the dark for weeks, his comments do not inspire me with confidence.
Having recently moved to Cincinnati from Boston, there were only two Audi dealers to choose from (either Beechmont or Northland). The routine service for our 98.5 Avant was just fine, but the service for our new order has certainly been disappointing.
If anyone has any thoughts or advice, I would love to hear it. For example, has anyone had this happen to them before? If it matters (in terms of the production sequence) my VIN is WAUCB28D8XA069904.
Thanks for your help,
Sean

Problem #1: The average time elapsed between ordering to AoA and receipt of a car is three months. AoA takes a dealer's monthly order on or about the 10th of the month. If you go into the dealer on the 7th to order, and I go in on the 13th to order, I'm dumped in to the following month's batch. Thus, a variance of a few days in ordering can, in itself, prolong the whole process by 30. Your dealer obviously hasn't kept you too current on the status, but that doesn't mean that he's lying about your car.
Problem #2: If the factory discovers a problem with one or more components on a given day, they will often "stop the flow" of cars all the way to the cars sitting on a dealer's lot until the problem can be corrected. It might only affect one, or none, or a few cars at the dealership level, but it can affect THOUSANDS of cars at the ports of entry. There is also often a problem with only one car that's caught at the port of entry, and AoA won't release the car until it's rectified. Believe it or not, EVERY CAR that AoA imports is inspected by a person before it's shipped to a dealer. AoA will usually not tell the dealer what part is replaced on a car at the port; don't be surprised if your dealer tells you they don't know. The dealer usually doesn't even KNOW when a car has had corrections made at the port. Frankly, your dealer made a mistake by telling you that there was anything being done to your car. I've NEVER told a customer that their car was having something fixed at the port, because I'm usually not told by AoA, and if I am, I don't feel that anyone benefits by being told.

Your car sounds like its coming in about the right time. I put down the deposit for mine on September 5th, and Audi accepted the order on September 8th. Originally, I was told that I would receive the car at or around the first week of December. However, after reading numerous posts here I came to the conclusion that my sales person was being *overly* optimistic and I figured it would be at least an extra month. Well, the car finally showed up at the port of Houston on 12/24 (VIN: WAUCB28D6EA065320, 4k before yours) and with the holiday's its scheduled to ship out to my dealer on 1/5. So, my best guess is that I'll get it on 1/13. Four months of waiting... Will it be worth it? Hell yes!
Chris
1.8t Silver QMS with all that other stuff
Ps. Do you have a web site that you can look at similar to www.teamhouston.com? You'd be able to get a better idea of when the car actually made it to the states and if its been delayed.
Sean,
I can only relay what happened to me. My car arrived at Wilmington on December 7th and was not delivered to the dealer until the 29th. I live in the DC metro area, so that is less than 100 miles. I do not know why i took so long, but it seems that Wilmington can be slower that other locations. In addition, Wilmington does not have a web site like "team houston", which means there is no way to track the delivery except through the dealer. My car is in the 56XXX sequence, just to give you a reference.
Good luck and its worth the wait (which you already know)
Eric L
99 A4 2.8 (140 miles and counting!)
