Took my car in for the 30K service. I also had the following items:
1. The red-orange piece where you plug in the safety belt broke on the passenger side. I called them two weeks ago and told them when I set up the appt. Gee, they NOW need to special order the part, guess I'll be making another trip.
2. The clutch doesn't always come all the way up (you can reach down and pull it up an inch or so). Others on this board had the same problem and then the clutch finally failed. They have now tried twice to fix it. The first time they said the clutch pedal was binding, this time they said it was catching on the carpet, can you believe it? What, am I a moron?
3. A persistent rattle in the dash somewhere. They have tried again and again and failed. I hate, hate, HATE having an expensive car that rattles like a hyundai.
4. A new even louder rattle. The missed that one too (but claimed to fix a rattle I've never heard before).
They did wash it nicely though.

I, too, had this exact same rattle. Through trial and error, I found that it was coming from the telescoping steering column. Next time you hear it, try pressing down/pushing up on the steerting wheel or loosening and retightening the handle under the column that control the telescoping action.
I've since seen several posts on this forum that describe this exact same solution

I also have a rattle which the dealer is looking at today during my first service. If they don't fix it, I will give this a try. Hopefully, I won't have to do anything.......
Gene

I've been driving a '97 1.8TQ Auto for several days, and it too has an annoying rattle somewhere above and to the left of the instrument cluster. (I suspect it's in the defrost vent.) I'm glad I'm not buying this particular car.
