I called the fastlane people and they tell me that it is designed to be mounted on the center of the front bumper, external to the vehicle. Laying it right on the lower facia panel under the oil cooler (2.8) seems to be an ideal location - preferable to me over mounting a 3 in square box on my windsheild. Anyone tried this?
P.S. I do a lot of traveling and have found some great Logan Airport parking spaces if anyone is interested.
Thanks, Bob H.

They told me the box should mount on inside windshield in front of rear view mirror. Different boxes, or just different options for mounting the same box?

There are two boxes available. The exterior mount is for special applications (I assume large trucks that would place the window mounted box outside of the pickup range) and costs a few dollars more. The lane receiver is designed to pickup the signal for the center portion vehicle, thus the requirement to mount behind the mirror or in the center of the bumper. This is what the're telling me anyway ...

So, if I understand you correctly, the regular box (meant for cars) can mount centered either inside windshield or front bumper?
Also, I have commercial plates (although car is privately owned by me), and I've been trying to determine what will happen if I get the New York State transponder--at much lower costs than the one from Massachusetts--and then try to use, say, the Ted Williams Tunnel during hours it is restricted to commercial traffic only. I can't get a straight answer from Fast Lane. For commercial plates, the Mass. transponder costs, I think, $22.50 plus they will always keep $50 charged to your credit card. New York's transponder is free and they only keep $15 charged to your card.

Doesn't the Turnpike Authority have enough money?
What do you mean by they always keep $50 charged to your card?
Finally, consider this. With the transponder box, it's pretty easy for the state to calculate your average speed from when you enter until when you exit the Pike. That's not something I'd want them to know.

Yes, they charge! They take a $50 credit card "deposit." After you use up a certain amount of that (not sure how much), they re-charge your card back up to $50! So, basically, they've always got $50 of your money and of course they pay no interest. Plus they charge for the transponder. If you are a BankBoston customer and have non-commercial plates, the $50 credit card deposit is waived and the tolls come out of your bank account.
-New York, which uses the same transponders, charges nothing for the equipment and only charges up to $15 on your credit card. They will be compatible with Massachusetts in September, so you can get the NY system and use it in Mass. Lots of people, including me, will do this!
