Not that I understand a lot about how the inside of the ECU works, but I was curious if chipping affects any of the parameters that control the Quattro on low traction conditions?
IE, my gut tells me that chipping will control things that determine engine power at different RPM's and that the Quattro engages independently on engine output.
But I also get the nagging feeling that since the Quattro re-distributes power to the wheels and the chip affects engine output, then wouldn't a chipped A4 act different in snow than a non-chipped A4? Especially since the chips are designed for engine output on dry road conditions?
I'm no engine/drivetrain guru, but I don't think whether a car is chipped or not affects the operation of the quattro system. The modified chip gives you more HP and torque, but regardless of how much power is going to the wheels the quattro should perform in the same manner. This is admittedly a simplistic description but when the system senses that a wheel is losing traction it redirects the power to the wheels that do have traction. It would seem to me that it should work all the same whether the engine puts out 150hp or 250hp.
I drove my car in stock form for 20K miles and for the past 10K have driven it with a Wett chip.
I have noticed no difference in the way quattro performs...in one word...AWESOME! ;-)
Dave
'97 1.8TQMS Wett, Eibach/Koni
