Sorry for shouting ...
but I seirously think it's a waste of money. With the kind of money, you can get a WAY better system without even touching the good old "boom box". After having the system in my other car, I just think it's not worth it. You can get a set of Clarion speakers and amp running from the stock deck being a lot better and clearer and still, cheaper. If you have the space to spare, BOOM BOX! haha ... but anyway, ya, a Clarion or Alpine system will give you better results with the same prices fitting in the same holes in your car.
~PreludeSH

...I had a loaner with the Bose system (my car has the stock Concert with CD changer). I really didn't notice any difference between the two systems. The way I look at it, if you spend an extra $1200 on a stereo, it should BLOW YOU AWAY! Definitely not the case with the Bose system, unfortunately...
Bob W.
'99 A4 1.8Tqms, APR

The Bose system can sound pretty good depending on the type of music that is being played and how that music was mixed.
But overall, I find the system lacks mid-range and I usually have to compromise between the bass and treble settings to make the system sound generally okay.
On the other hand, I really didn't want to mess with aftermarket head unit, CD changer, and speakers so I just went with the best that was available stock - and yes, I think it is better than the base Concert stereo.
I'm sure that $1200 will get you better, but going with the Bose lets you bury the cost in the financing instead of directly out of pocket for an aftermarket setup. I'm putting that $1200 towards some new rims.
I guess it depends on where your priorities lay, but I'm generally happy with the Bose system. Weird thing is that my wife loves it because it has boomy bass.
- Rog
'99 Silver 2.8QMS

Well, I like my upgraded sound system
in the 99.5 A4. It's a good stock stereo
system. I'm not too picky on car stereos
but I can judge whether it's a good or
bad system on my own.
I am also too lazy and hesitant to go
with aftermarket stereos because usually
those car audio shops rip you off anyways
- unless you know what you're buying and
knowing all the little components that
go into your car.
Just my opinion.
/Seb

I have the Bose system and think it is fantastic. There are people on the board who think otherwise. It really comes down to the individual listiner. In my mothers Lexus, she has the Nachamichi Sound System, and I think that it is just awful, I prefer the stock system in that car.
Yes the bose does soften the bass, and mid range quite a bit. But that is the way bose does things. Every audio provider is different. And you really have to listin and choose what you want. When I go to buy a stereo, I listin to it and bring my own music, something that I am familiar with to decide if I like it or not. I don't listin to the CD that the salesmen has because typically they are more bassy or midrange then what I look for. I use Ravel's Bolaro to make my decision because the first 5 minutes is extremely quite, and I am looking for something that can bring it out, and the Bose system accomplishes that. BTW, I did not have a choice with the audio packages because I bought the car pre-owned, but I am not disappointed.
The Concert mids and highs are much better than the Bose IMHO. All it needs is a powered sub and you've got a better setup than the Bose for about $400 installed.
