I just called my local dealer (Milwaukee, WI) and was told that the heated mirrors only work with the defroster switch. I did a quick test and the drivers side got SLIGHTLY warm after 3 minutes while the passenger side stayed cold. How long should it take for these things to warm up?
David

New good mirrors actually get very hot almost immediately!

What year A4 do you have? Have you tried activating your heated mirrors by only running the engine and not using the rear defroster switch? Let us know the results.

First, you definitely need auto electrical knowledge to perform the change over to rear defroster switch control. There will be splicing into the current wiring and adding a relay. Audi may not like this while under warranty! In fact, they should come up with the retro fit kit.
Second, manual trans cars will lose the constant on outside temp display (turn the defroster on to read). Worse...the auto trans people will lose their gear selector display and the outside temp display.
If anyone is still interested, just ask and I will put together an FAQ on the change over.

Not to beat this issue to death, but I have a '96 A4 q/m, and the outside mirrors don't heat up UNTIL I switch up the rear defroster. They heat up very quickly, which is a blessing here in Western Massachusetts.

As a reward Audi will supply you free heated mirrors for 100 years, if ever needed!

... that there is nothing wrong with them and that they are not supposed to get that hot. I'm bringing my ohm meter in and checking the resistance once they pop them off.
I find the outside temp display very useful. I would not like having to desable it. I recall a post about the mirrors and the temp display being powered by fuse 7? I wonder if there is a way to power the temp display through a different fuse.
David

Bob,
Am I to infer that you decided *not* to tap into the individual heater wires (by the connectors) instead of right at the fuse box? (i.e. you had mentioned last month that you wanted to get your temperature display back.) Just curious.

Tom
'97 2.8q white

Steven, my service rep in East Hartford says mine are OK on my 96 but they are never warm. Is it rear defroster and temp. or any other condition?
I don't get Bob's post do you?
Bill

Bob, I'd still be interested in you posting a FAQ please. At least your procedure sounds like a place to start.
Mike
I'm just too lazy to hunt down the individual connectors for each mirror heater. I will probably do it next spring. The conversion works just great so far.....nice to see water droplets vaporize in seconds (my style)! As for the outside temp display....hitting the defrost once to read and again to turn off is no big deal for me right now. Rewiring the individual mirrors looks like it will take an additional wire from the passenger side to the driver side.
I was thinking about the whole issue last night and seeing that Audi has a connector supplier that can come up with a easy retrofit. It will save Audi tons of money replacing mirrors.
