I recently drove from Springfield, MA, to Columbia, MD, and back, and even though I averaged 70 mph (hey, give me a break; the smokies were out in force), I still encountered those jerks on the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey who insisted on tailgating me.
To get them off my tail, all I had to do was flip on my rear fog light. That freaked out 90 percent of the tailgaters. They didn't know what was going on -- was I braking, or what? Anyway, the bright light made them either back off or quickly change lanes.
Of course this only works at night ... or very overcast days when you have your lights on. But it was fun to see the other drivers' reactions.
StevenN '96 Emerald Green 2.8 qm

About one to two months ago when I drove to the airport through Vancouver's highway in the late night, a jerks drving a Chevrolet Silverado Dually tailgated me all the way through the tunnel at 60 mph. I turned on the rear fog light and lifted throttle to slowed down the vehicle. The jerks driving the pick-up truck really thinks I am braking the car. The result: the jerks kept a long distance behind me until I exited the highway, and he will continuous to tailgate another vehicle (without rear fog light) in a Canada Westcoast full-size pick up truck tallgater style!!!
Tom (the anti pick-up truck kind of people)
97 A4 1.8TQM

Heard from Basking Ridge (central/northern NJ) Police Sargeant that there is the so-called "James Bond Gang" going around with Lexus', BMW, and Mustang Cobra that have a blinding spotlight behind flip-down license plate and oil and tacks that drop down from bumper. Think about what that would do to would-be tailgaters....
Oh, yeah, they rob houses in Morris County.
-josh

Hey Steven,
Keep in mind that whenever you turn on the rear fog light in a North American spec A4, it automatically turns on the front fogs as well. This can be quite confusing for any drivers in front of you. The fogs on the A4 are built into the headlight, and people in front may think you are flashing your high beams at them.
I have not only added a second rear fog light to the passenger side of the car, I have also rewired my fog lights so that they can be operated independently, anytime the ignition's on. I did the rewiring for better front lighting in dense fog, but the added bonus is that I can now turn on my rear fog lights to scare off tailgaters without my lights being on, and without automatically turning on the front fog lights.
My instructions for the fog light rewiring can be found at the A4 Club of Vancouver web site. The URL is linked below.
Check it out if you're interested.

James Wu
A4 Club of Vancouver
1998 Black/Onyx 1.8tqa

Fog light switch rewiring instructions

The headlight washers on the A4 are WAY powerful. I was driving on the highway last week, and decided to use the headlight washers to get some of the grime of my lights. It took me several minutes to realize why the car behind me was flashing its lights every time I did this (I used them twice, just to be sure). Finally, I put two and two together and realized that the spray from the headlight washers was all over the car behind me's windshield.
At the time, we were going highway speeds. I'm not sure if this would also happen at slower speeds.

Miles
