Man! That's what I get for driving Japanese cars for years. I've got 1400 miles on me Ahhfour, and I still keep pulling up to the pumps, get out, grab hose, start to open filler door....duhhh, back up and do over.
I can't remember who it was, but whoever posted a few months ago about driving a few friends around for a ride in his new A4, and then desperately needing gas and not being able to figure it out after 3 tries, is still IMO the best 'gas' story.
99.5 1.8tqms (presently designing a funnel that goes from left side of car into right side filler door, so I'll quit having to move dang car over.)

Most of the cars I drive on a somewhat frequent basis all have their tanks on the left, however my girlfriend's Golf is the exception. Now, I'm not sure if this is true or not (it seems logical, though) but someone once told me that VW/Audi puts their door on the right because stats show that more accidents (in the US, where we drive on the right side of the road, and thus oncoming traffic is on the left) occur on the left side of the car, so thus the placing on the right.
Seems like a good reason to me -- regardless, it's how I remember.
Closer to ordering MY2K 1.8TQMSX

Depends on the Manufacture, but from what I had heard it has to do with which side of the car the exhaust is on, has to do with a fire hazard during fill-up. Don't ask me about those with dual exhausts.

A different car every week from Hertz. When running late to the airport and hitting a crowded gas station AND getting the wrong side of the car, it can get rather annoying. But, at least some of those crappy domestics tell you which side the gas cap is on next to the fuel gauge.

Supposedly the reason was to prevent people who run out of gas from getting run over when filling their car u0p on the side of the road... Right side is away form traffic... Could just be a myth though.

... you open your driver's side door in the direction away from the island, so you don't bang the door into the pump. My Ford truck's filler door is on the left, and it's always a pain if you pull up close along the pumps!
