I like the white gauges a lot on cars like the old S4/S6, the Mercedes SLK, etc., and have been thinking about getting them on my A4 to go along with the wood shift knob my girlfriend got me for Christmas (hey, Unabimmer, spare me the "poseur" remarks). I just can't decide if the white gauges will look good in my car (2.8, therefore wood trim; ecru leather interior; cactus green exterior).
I would appreciate any opinions.
Rich D.

I got some from Germany. They weren't cheap but look good quality. When I put them on there was light leakage from around the needles etc. It really looked tacky.
What I found, is there is a light sensor on the lower right of the speedometer that dims or lightens the amount of light the gauges emmit according to the ambiante light. These white gauge faces do not have the window like the OEM faces have. Therefore the light is always at its max.
Another thing, how do you calibrate your needles after you reinstall them?
I placed them close to original, but I still think they are off.

I love mine and they are about 85% correct in light transmission, it doesnt bother me. The problem I encountered was that the voltmete didnt work afterwards and that some of the needles dont go back to zero when off. They take a lot of fooling with to fix so make sure you know what youa re doing as the Audi warranty is voided when you do this. BTW, mine are from NR Auto/
Chris

My A4 page-go to "My A4" section

This is not as straight forward as it appears
you can easily damage any of the gauges while pulling off the pointers
E-mail me for more info

I have a set in ine, and the color slightly "spreads" out from the lines where the light comes through.. it's to be expected..black just holds light better, ya know?
I REALLY took my time, and used the info from the climate control panel, as well as a voltmeter, and recording where they sat both with car off and running (warmed up) to determine where the needles should sit. It's worth it now, as mine are dead-on accurate. (Well, the voltmater gets optimistic when the car is running, but it's right on when the engine is off..)
Rich Quinlan
Nowhere near stock 1.8tqms

Quinland

I did the NR brand this summer, I like them. As for the installation, the above suggestions work well for calibrating, I lightly assembled the pack, re-installed it and set it final after seeing where I was at. I have a trip comp. on my 98tqms so the dials needed to be trimmed, Neil Rayburn told me this was un-necessarry, but he was WRONG. The type of dash you have is important, only VDO style will accept these new inserts. VDO guages dont have stop pins, thats the kicker. I spent alot of time in dashboards, doin' Audio, I'm pretty good, so take your time and you can achieve a slick looking dash, I love the look.
I also have the NR Auto white gauges on my 30V, and i am pleased with the way they look in my interior - i have silver leather with the dark wood (pre-ambiance interior). Some people might not like the light leakage - to you i say, "why are you staring at your gauges so much? Look at the road, idiot!" = )
Would I do it again? Well, i didn't install them myself, so sure, why not. Like someone else said, it's not as easy as it sounds. I had a go at it myself and found myself trying to pull the needles off with no avail - eventually sense kicked in and i realized it's probably better to let someone else mess around with my $1000+ cluster. All in all? Go for it!
Edmund Louie
98 A4Q 30V
