Most comments here have been positive, though descriptions of performance improvement have ranged from "substantial" to "very subtle" (which I interpret to mean "barely noticeable").
I've been thinking about chipping for a long time, and am just wondering if anyone thinks it was a waste of money.
Rich D.
'98.0 A4 2.8QM, H&R/Koni, K&N, Stebro catback

When I first wett-chipped my 2.8 in September I tried a series of timed acceleration runs to compare before/after performance. Using a stopwatch, I found my measurement error was larger than any difference. The main area I could feel an improvement was in the 4000-5000 rpm range. Overall, I'd put the improvement in the same ballpark as turning off the a/c (try to think back to when the weather was warmer!). Enough to notice, but no way would I call it substantial.
I don't consider it a waste of money, but others might depending on how dear $500 is to them.
--Dave
98.5 2.8qms

Rich,
DaveD is right, the change is minimal at best. However, I went with the Neuspeed chip and RamAir filter. It saved about $250 over Wett/TAP, and seems to have about the same effect.
I don't regret doing it and especially with the Neuspeed chip it is very hard to detect ( they flash the existing chip ), but that means you really can't go back without having the same thing done.
The biggest difference I have noticed is in fuel economy. If you want to read my notes on my registry page at the link below. I have been looking at a sport exhaust, so maybe that will make it a little more noticable...then again, maybe not.
Rick
98.5 Avant QMS, Neuspeed/RamAir

My Registry Page

Installed a Neuspeed chip(reprogrammed)from Greedspeed for $139. it was money well spent-vastly improved response and eliminated the flat-spot/dip in power at 3500/4500 rpm-pulls strong all the way now to max.. Remember the a4 is not geared like a VR6 GTI(which I also own) and it feels less "torquey". Also have a friend with a 1.8TQ+TIP who also put in the Neuspped chip and filter(RamAir) and the difference is like night and day (granted the turbo is a bigger jump in wheel hp vs the 30v). Also have RamAir, Scorpion on the 30v along with 5spd. fwd.,Eibach/Bilsteins and 17" Borbet'C' with 225/45/ .

i don't regret chipping either. i have the wett chip and the performance is slight, but there is a gain, subltle. more noticable in 3rd gear and above. throttle response is better. i would like to add a cat back for more gains. all in all worth the money. faster than a chipped 1.8 (no flames),with any stage 1.
wc

Sounds like a Good race to me. a Chipped30v would have Better Midrange, no turbo lag and Probably 10 more HP than a Chipped 1.8. A Chipped 1.8 Weighs less(even more if its FWD).

Tony 1.8 (Not trying to start a War)

Yeah, I have sort of. JayP and I tagged along for a while on a track. The 1.8tq accelerates so well out of corners it's not even funny. The low end torque of the 1.8 helped quite a bit when he was coming out of a "low" speed turn. Both of us were in 3rd gear (2nd is too low coming out of the turn), and he took off. Having driven both, I can safely say that the 1.8t chipped is the quicker car. I love my 2.8 though. Smooth as glass, and yes I do like the interior more with the wood trim.
Both of us have BFG R1's. He has an MTM chip, and I have a Wett 2.8 chip. I wouldn't go back to unchipped though. It's a definate improvement, just don't expect it to be like chipped a 1.8t.
98.5 Wett RamAir'ed Santorin Blue 2.8QMS

Rich,
I feel the 30V is much more torquey when chipped and more responsive. I want a faster, slightly bigger, more luxurious car next time out (Maybe this summer/fall). Forget the extra mods, I'm getting a BMW 540i!
Rick
