My A4 1.8 T seems to use alot more engine oil than any other car i've owned-need to add a quart about every 1500-2000 miles, occassionally more often. No blue smoke, no oil spots in my garage. (The serious yellow oil light did come on once, and the car ended up with a new turbo.). My dealership ran an oil concumption test for 2000 miles, and saw the usage i described. they claimthat's normal oil consumption. but it still seems like alot of oil to me. couple of my frineds with A4s say they never need to top up oil between service. What's your experience? I would be grateful for any feedback.

The only time I saw significant oil consumption on my 99.5 A4 QMS was after an oil leak developed on a cam shaft seal. There was significant oil (but not puddles) underneath my car in the garage, but car still used only 1 quart in 1000 miles. I now have 5,000 miles and have noticed no oil usage measured at dipstick. Was told I should expect more oil usage during break in, but even though I followed break in schedule, didn't seem to use much if any oil in first 1000 miles.

23K miles on my '97 1.8T. My car sees fairly hard use on a daily basis (yes, I'm a lead foot). I chipped it early (at like 1200 miles) and I've run Mobil 1 15w-50 since the first 7,500 oil change. Oh, it didn't it need any oil in during the inital 7,500 miles either. My car has not required any oil additions between changes.
I wouldn't consider 1 quart per 2000 miles normal... hell, that would be almost 3 quarts of oil if you follow the ' 98-'99 cars 5,000 mile change interval!
Keep on them to prove it's normal.

54k on a 97 1.8T, I've had to add a little (i.e. 1/2 pint now and again), but never on a regular basis. I had a valve cover leak, and a leaking oil filter. I had a cam shaft seal leak too but it didn't puddle under my car. Dealer found it by inserting ultraviolet tracer dye, and I came back after 4000 miles on it.
Maybe they can do the same for you?

my 97 1.8T with 14K miles has not required any "extra" oil in between services.

I have a 2.8 with 15K and also have to add oil between changes. Last time I added two quarts! I also think is not normal, but i get a similar story from the dealer. I made sure the problem was documented in case later a problem is found, then I have on record a problem being reported. Did that make sense?
good luck
Paul N

that any reading up to 1qt/1000miles is "normal". Their story changed to around 1qt/1000miles [which included 1qt/900miles] when I showed them my records. I've been recording my usage for 5000+ miles and they're now requiring me to stop in to have a serviceman personally check the oil every 1000 to determine what they're going to do.
I've even taken the car to an independent Audi garage. They're shocked to see an A4 using more than 1qt/2000miles. Unfortunately (or is that fortunately) I'm still under warranty so I have to go through the dealer's song and dance.
Has anyone with excessive oil consumption ever reached a resolution with their dealer? Please give us some guidance on how to get the dealer to take action.
Any help is appreciated..
I have never heard of, or owned, a car that burned oil like that and it was called normal consumption. It's going SOMEWHERE! Like another post said, if you go on a 5,000 mile service interval you are burning up 2/3 of the original oil you put in! That is not normal. Audi's position on this issue is ridiculous. Stand your ground. Get AoA involved. And watch your dipstick like a hawk.
Mine burned only 1/3 quart in the first 5K. I switched to Mobil 10W30 synthetic at the first change.
BDW '99 1.8Tqms

No oil consumed in 30K / 22 months. I use Mobil1 15W-50 in summer, 5W-50 in winter, change it both during regular 7.5K mile service and in-between so that I get 3-4K miles per fresh batch. I use fresh filter every time.
B.
