View Full Version : Cool air intake stevebrown 10-20-1998, 07:01 AM Check this link out...
http://www.autospeed.com/A_0009/P_1/article.html
Looks like it's an Aussie page...love the way these guys talk (type)!
steve Zsolt 10-20-1998, 08:23 AM donp 10-20-1998, 08:59 AM yea, but the A4 takes cold air from right behind the grill. And it's not even close to the road so wate/snow is not an issue either.
Cris 10-20-1998, 09:23 AM So, are you thinking of tinkering with something like this?
:)
Cris donp 10-20-1998, 09:31 AM No sir.
After removing the airbox to install the K04 turbo I don't see where you could improve the intake without hacking up the airbox. The cold air duct behind the grill dumps right into the airbox.
My car screams... I see no reason to mess with it. stevebrown 10-20-1998, 10:12 AM They argue that most intakes are too small (dunno, for the A4). The one they describe is like an additional pathway to the airbox made of the big ducting...
Again, I don't know if the stock intake (from the grill to the airbox) is at all restrictive on the A4.
steve Edmund L 10-20-1998, 10:25 AM First on agenda is that it's quite nearly impossible to fit a 3" PVC pipe from the airbox to the outside of the car, no matter which direction you go in...right below the airbox, if you remove it, there's a whole bunch of parts which makes the task nearly impossible. I say nearly because i'm sure there's someone who'll eventually do it (not me :). Additionally, air taken closer to the road will be a bit hotter, if that makes any difference....the air taken from behind the grille will be about 8-10F cooler then air taken from, say, the lower spoiler.
However, if it can be done without too much trouble, i'm sure you'll get some kinda performance gain. My brother and I did a similar modification to his 98 M3, adding a 2.5" flex hose from the airbox directly into the brake duct.. . . he hasn't done any quanatative testing, but has told me that it's a bit faster over 80mph...in any case, for $15 and 2 hours of our time it couldn't hurt. :)
Edmund Louie
98 A4Q 30V donp 10-20-1998, 10:29 AM I dunno.
TAP doesn't change to a cone type filter until you get to their 285hp kit so maybe somewhere between 255 and 285 is the flow limit of the cold air duct.
Pure speculation on my part. Josh K 10-20-1998, 11:59 AM My friend did something like this on his VR6 GTI. He cut a hole in the stock airbox so it sucks in swirled air through the plastic cover in the wheelwell. The car has more top end pull now and the difference is only noticable >5500 RPM.
I was considering doing something similar to my 2.8 since the air intake tubing is kinkier than Marv Albert (and I'll have no warranty come november)... Maybe some sort of cone setup with ducting from below the bumper and an elaborate heat shield next to the block. ErikR 10-20-1998, 12:34 PM Jeff 10-20-1998, 12:44 PM Are you running a stock airbox with that? I have the Hoppen kit and I am using a cone filter...but I'm not sure which airfilter is a better setup... Oscar 10-20-1998, 01:31 PM To my '88 GTI 16V, that is. I made a hole to a side of the air box and ran a hose from the airbox down the the front bumper grill. It made a little difference on my little engine (123 hp from factory). Actually, close to 140 hp with the header and exhaust as well.
I can keep up with a non-chipped 1.8T :)
My next project consists doing the same to my G60. I had a modified air box on the Corrado, went to the P-flow and it got quieter and slower :(
Oscar
97.5 1.8TQM donp 10-20-1998, 02:25 PM A cone filter?
Pass. I don't want to suck all that superheated air from the turbo and engine that's found under the hood. pac1085 03-18-2009, 07:36 AM You know..they banned the last person who bumped this many threads myers1.8TQ 03-18-2009, 07:38 AM Yep, thundervalley, buh bye.
