Hi,
I have the winter pkg option on my A4, of which only the heated sets & nozzle work. The heated mirrors simply did not turn on. It is supposed to be on when the car starts up (97 model). I took it to Loeber Motors, Chicago (not where I purchased the car) and I must say I was impressed by their courteous service. They have replaced both mirrors (no questions asked) and I will be collecting the car this evening. To those owners with questionable heated mirrors..get them replaced within the warranty period. An anecdotal observation of this forum tells me that this is a fairly common problem.
Kandiah
97 A4 QM

Just had my second mirror on my '98 1.8T replaced at 15k. Hopefully, I won't have to keep doing this after the warranty is up.
Jim
I think the heated mirrors are over-used. Try the relay to have the heated mirrors come on when you turn on the rear defroster. That way, the heated mirrors are not over-used. The instructions are at the FAQ page. I plan on doing this next weekend.
Good Luck!

If you employ this fix in a car without a trip computer, the temp display will only come on when you activate the rear defroster. The mirror heaters and the temp display are on the same circuit.....both controlled by fuse #9.
The mirrors will probably cost $200 to replace after warranty! To see your outside temperature display with rewired mirrors .....just hit the rear defroster switch, read it, turn it off. I doubt you read your temperature display continuously, if you do, then just buy mirrors every 6 months!
These mirrors only last approximately 6 months before they are totally useless with snow/ ice on them. My rewired mirrors made the ice that covered them last Saturday vaporize in the matter of less than a minute and the outside temp was 6 degrees F. 6 month old mirrors would never touch this ice.

Hey Bob,
I appreciate the instructions, and it was a very good thing Stan is very careful with his written FAQ. The fact that he told people to check the circuit by pulling the fuse (#9) first probably saved a few people from making their outside temperature reading "disappear".
However, one word of caution, especially to Tiptronic owners who did not opt for the trip computer. If you decide to do this modification, not only will your outside temperature display vanish, so will your Tiptronic gear selection display just under that. These two are on the same unit behind the dash (I've taken mine apart, so I know), and so are powered by the same circuit. If you do the modification as described, you will lose your gear display as well (until you turn on the rear defrost I' assume). And I'm pretty sure you look at that a lot more than the temperature display, especially driving in Tiptronic mode.
This is just so people would know if they have a Tip and no Trip and are thinking about doing this modification. And to let you (Bob P.) know of the situation. I've already written an e-mail to Stan about it. Of course, he won't get it until he gets back on the 8th though.
Hope this helps.

James Wu
A4 Club of Vancouver
1998 Black/Onyx 1.8tqa

A4 Club of Vancouver

The cars can be wired to have the displays (temp/trans) constantly while controlling the mirrors. It just takes a lot more effort. Stan and myself are lazy and went the easy route! Of couse we have manual transmissions.
