so this morning got to drive my A4 out of an alley with 1FT of unplowed snow.
To make it short, it took me 1hr to get a 1998 honda civic out, and 30 seconds in the quattro.
(quattro rules, blah blah)
However:
I was playing in the deep snow for about an hour, spinning the wheels, feeling the EDL etc.
When i was done, and got out the car, i could smell the brake pads!!
I know the A4 uses the brakes to limit spin. Seems to me that this is a short term thing that should be used to get out of a bind, but not to go "off roading". Won't this prematurely wear the pads and rotors? As well as heat up the rotors (read warp)
I am starting to think that a limited slip on the rear is a good idea. Anyone install the Quaiffe unit?

Comments?
1996 a4 2.8 qm

I agree, I think that the EDL is really just meant for getting out of nasty situations...I guess it was a cost cutting measure to keep price down since it is a "free" form of traction control and it takes advantage of the characteristics of the open diffs at each axle.
Wouldn't it be possible to have 3 Torsen differentials? One in the middle that splits torque front and rear, and one at each axle that splits torque left and right...
I was reading somewhere the other day that you can get Torsen limited slip diffs for Pontiac Firebirds! Pretty cool....
Cheers,
-Ash 98.5 Silver 1.8TQMS
My wife said she smelled "something burning" yesterday, after spinning the tires trying to get through the snowbank that had been deposited at the end of our driveway. Now at least I know what the smell was. By the way, Quattro does rule blah blah blah. My wife would have never gotten through the bank without it (at least without me doing a lot of shoveling).
Does anyone know if the new Cherokee has three torsen diffs? The advertising says something like "the most capable four-wheel drive system ever", and says that it can apply 100% of the torque at one wheel. Do they do it with three torsens or what?
