View Full Version : Frozen Trunk

Every morning and evening, while heading to/from work I have arrived to my '98 A4 to find the trunk frozen shut. Temperatures have been fluctuating between 15 and 30 degrees with intermittent rain every few days. The trunk seems to respond to the remote and the trunk lock button can be pushed in, but this sucker won't budge. I'm not sure if the freezing is occuring in the lock or in the side expansion rods (the ones that look like shock absorbers that control the movement of the trunk). After I drive the car for my 30 minute ride, I can open the trunk - but if the car then sits for a few hours, I'm back to ground zero. None of my previous car trunks were that sensitive to winter. Any suggestions?
Also, what other winter precautions are you taking in your A4s? (Dry gas?) The dealer has told me that the anti-freeze in this car will not need to be changed for a VERY long time.

I seemed to have a similar, but not identical, problem when I was up in the snow. My trunk lock would not unlock remotely (via either the remote or the inside unlock button), but would open fine when using the (gasp!) physical key. Of course I'm going to be unable to show this to the dealer...

Just like you described, the trunk lock button can be pushed in but didn't open.
I haven't tried today but it's 18F outside...
As for the gas tank, I'm not using Dry Gas and always keep at least half tank of the gas.
Nozomi

Liz:
I have had the same problem opening my trunk in sub-freezing temps.
I will look into those silicone options discussed in the forum, but just FYI, I find that I can open my trunk with my key manually by turning it to the left. I thought maybe I had somehow messed up the auto unlock function, since this can be adjusted. Let me know if you find a solution other than the manual unlock! I will ask my dealer at my next service interval (20000)
Thanks,
Andrew
98 1.8 tqms wett

Mine too!
It will unlock but you have to pull up with some pretty strong forces to get the trunk open.
I noticed that there was ice on the hinge area once I did get it open.
Jim

Silicone all rubber seals for trunk, doors, windows, etc will reduce icing.
Also, your observation is a good one about the trunk hinge area. This is an area that will collect frozen water and snow and cause havoc with opening or closing the trunk. I noticed this last year and if not carefull you could bend the hinge.
Be warned
Skier with too much time and not enought snow time
2.8Qspt-tip
