I have deceided to wait for the 1999.5 A4, but I'm not sure which engine is a better buy. Other than the engine size I don't see any difference. Also, is the sports package worth the extra money?

Check the archives for lots of opinions.
The consensus appears to be that if you want a tiptronic, get the 2.8. Otherwise, go 1.8 and chip it if you want more performance. Also, as JAB most subtly opined, get the sports package. It's absolutely worth it unless you're a grandma, IMO, and if you're a grandma you're probably not looking at an A4 (also your name probably wouldn't be Todd ;-).
Once again, though, check the archives for more.

You may want to check the archives for many discussions regarding the 1.8 vs. 2.8. I have the 1.8T because I think it's a better value - I simply couldn't afford another $3500 or $4000. However if I had the money I would go with the 2.8 (quieter, smoother, more power). I also think (my opinion) that the turbo is the weak link in the engine and so for long term durability it may be the 1st to go). Chipping is an option to get the power out of the 1.8T, but the engine & turbo will be more strained - long term effects are an uncertainty.
Good luck - no problem either way.
Tom
1.8TQMS Silver/Ecru

1. Can you afford the 2.8?
2. Are you looking at future upgrades or performance mods?
3. Do you prefer a manual or automatic tranny?
4. Are you more luxery or sport minded?
5. What will you be using the car for?
These are some of the variables that you need to answer.
Answers:
1. Get the 2.8
2. 1.8T is more upgradeable
3. Go with the 2.8 if you prefer auto tranny.
4. 2.8 luxery, 1.8T sporty (in general)
5. Tough one. I would tend to think of the 2.8 as a cruiser and smoother. The 1.8T might be a little "funner". I would tend to think a 2.8 would last longer (no flames I have a 1.8T and love it).

Answer these questions and see where you stand.
RobS
98 Laser Red 1.8T QMS Neuspeed

I can afford the 2.8 and I like a car that can perform and be comfortable to drive. I will get a 5 speed manual trans. I like speed, but I want this car to last and I don't want to do any mods that are going to shorten the life of this car.
I guess the 2.8 is the right choice, but I like to drive fast when it's safe. Choices, choices.

I have the 1.8T and very happy with it. I guess it is a matter of preference and economic situation. If you do get a 1.8T get a 5 speed. Never really looked at the 2.8 to be honest with you.

First, I am admittedly biased against Turbos, largely because I feel they do not have the durability of a normally aspiriated engine. I got a 30V Avant with manual trany, Sport package and Sport seats; love it! Car is a delight when driven hard on a back country road, extremely comfortable on long trip except suspension can be a little harsh on bad roads. Only gripe is engine response. Due (probably) to emission rules, there is a large 'flywheel" effect on the engine, whereby have to wait an excessive time for engine speed to drop in between shifts to appropriate RPM for next higher gear. Listers seem to feel this is a generic 30V problem; 1.8T owners do not notice this as much. Complained to my dealer at 87500 mile service; they said its normal.
Best suggestion is to drive both, and see what you think.
