I am in the market for buying a car now and the Audi 1.8 has caught my eye. I am just deciding whether I should get the quatrro. I am planing to modify it(240+hp) Now, the quatrro is about 150hp heavier and I really hate to have this extra dead weight, I live in Los Angeles too, so the weather is usually sunny for most of the year.
My other quesiton is if the steering wheels quickly shudders when you hit a bump on a road. This is a problem with FWD cars but will this shake still happen, since I am running power through the front wheels?? thanks for all the help.

Get the Quattro.
The racing ban on Quattro and other AWD vehicles for having an "unfair advantage" is due to the superior handling through the corners in all weather - not just bad weather gains. Like the Audi commercial says...I'll take all the unfair advantage I can get.
Also, before I bought my car I was in contact with several Florida and California current and previous A4 owners. Those that had purchased FWD only (based on no snow where they live) were unhappy with wet road traction - especially on takeoff.
Mitch 99.5 1.8tqms
Don't waste your money on anything but the quatrro. Good weather or bad, the quatrro certainly makes the car.

I live in LA and have a 99 1.8t with quattro and manual tranny. A grwat combination especially after the Nuespeed chip. Tha balance of power at four corners make this a fine handling car. It also makes a big difference on resale value. Over bumpy agrresive cornering I feel this to be an extremly tight car, no feel of engine in the steering. The ONLY way to go!

... I also was debating at first on whether on not to get Quattro on my Audi. I was originally going to get Sunroof/Sport package, but after much reading and debating, dropped the sport package and went for quattro. If you would have read what I had read, you'd feel the same. AWD is more than bad weather equipment. Dry or wet, AWD gives you so much of an advantage.
If you are planning to modify, remember that even though there is a 150lb differnce, the Quattro can handle A LOT more power than FWD can. If you want to modify, go Quattro. You will NOT regret it, I and many owners on this board, can garuntee you that.
Good Luck
Marcus Frost - 99.5 1.8TQM [On Order]
Test drive both back to back. You'll feel the difference Quattro makes.
