Anyone experience the extreme cold temperatures this past holiday in Vermont and it's effect on your A-4?
I had the following occur:
-18F, the coolant warning light blinks with chime. Check manual it says low coolant or overheating engine. This is upon initial start so the engine is not overheating.
Try turn off engine and restart thinking it is computor gremlin, delays warning light for few seconds and reappears again.
Do it several times and check coolant. Drive for 2 minutes and try again. Still warning. Finally as temp gauge creeps into 1/4 warm range system warning light goes off.
Dutifully go to local Audi - rep says coolant sensor is stuck and not to worry as long as coolant is there and temp gauge is ok
Anybody had kave this experience? Is this a worry? Happen every morning when temps were sub-zero.
Almost like a warning NOT to drive untill warm.
Also when this cold all systems are slow to respond, in particular, that some "pump" made some barely audible whine until warmed.
Quattro and Michellin X+M Alpins handled ice, slush, snow and rain admirably.
Skiing was fair at best

Skimants, 98.5/ 2.8Qspt-tip
I live in MD and I've had the same problem. I took the car to the dealer and they replaced the sensor after finding no coolant leak. One week after the sensor was replaced, same thing happens. I checked the coolant level, which was fine, and continued driving. When the temp reached normal, the blinking stopped.
I have the car at the dealer right now to hopefully repair this problem for good.
If they come up with a fix, I'll post it.

Mick
98 2.8qm

I did a trip from Idaho to Iowa just before Christmas and had to do several very cold starts during that cold snap, including a -20 F in Cheyenne, WY. I never had any warning lights or trouble starting my 97 1.8T. It did make some noise until driven. Kind of a higher-pitched squeak that went away immediately after I started driving. Asked my local dealer about the noise, he thought it might be a belt. The noise doesn't occur unless the car is left outside overnight in well below freezing temperatures, and it never corresponded to any noticeable change in driving performance. I drove over 3000 miles that week without any problems. My set of Yokohama Guardex snow tires performed great in snow near Jackson coming home. Now if I could just get all the other cars to get out of the way...
Terry T. 97 1.8TQM

I did notice that the LED lights in the Trip computer were real slow to change from one reading to the next until the car started to warm up.
Biggest problem is not being able to wash the car when it's around zero. : - )
Greg "S"

When I lived in Burlington back in 95-96 we had several -20F days. The car started a little slowly and the LEDs were very slow to come up. No problems with the coolant light though.
Chris
96 A4 2.8q at the time
to reply, remove anti-spam x

Mick,
Sounds like you and I have this problem. What was your build date on your unit. Mine was Nov. 1998.
Possibly there might be a commonality to check out with Audi. My next service isn't for another 3000 miles.
Post me if you come up with anything.
TIA
Skimants
