I am an ex-pat (U.S.) living in London, UK and I would very much like to buy an A4 in Europe (Spain, Germany) where it is cheaper but I don't know how to go about it. I do not want right hand drive so that should make it easy. I would get it in the U.S., but the I would have to leave the car state-side for 6 months before bringing it to the UK due to import tax laws. Does anyone know of some dealers/agents in Europe/UK that are good for this sort of transaction? Also does anyone know how a car gets license (number) plates, registered, insurance, etc. when purchased in one country and taken to another? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have been test driving some A4's while I have been State-side for the holidays and now I can't wait to get one!
Cheers,
--Ian.
NOTE: I first posted this last night but it seems that the forum has changed overnight so I posted it again. If anyone can help me out here I would be very grateful.
Might check with Audi web site; find if they have a site in country you are interested in. I know Porsche can arrange for US buyers to pick up their cars in Germany, and Porsche will arrange for shipment to US. Doing it this way, they handle all ceritification/custom problems.
You don't say where car will finally go, but if you try to bring it into US, amke sure it is a US certified car - and this might be difficult to do unless done thru Audi hdqtrs. themselves.
Ian,
As the UK is part of the EEC any dealers in the EEC including Germany and Spain are legally obligued to supply you a car(left or right hand drive). If you go to Southern Germany (Munich) there are US forces bases in that area so you may find the dealers better equipped to deal with your scenario. I would be more inclined to deal with the Germans as they are trustworthy.
In Spain, make it clear that you are from the US rather than the UK and you will get better treatment.
The car would initially be registered in the country of origin and you would have to pay import tax on import to the UK(this is for UK citizens anyway). Once in the UK, you would then apply to the DVLA in Swansea 01792 772151 for a UK registration number and certficate in order that you can obtain road fund license disk.
The only modification you would have to make is to reverse the headlight aim, you may also wish to convert the speedo to MPH from KMH.
Good Luck.
